Description:
Dr. Stephens was named the first president of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (known then as SLI) on January 23, 1900. In 1934 he founded the Live Oak Society, a registry now in 14 states.
His goal was to identify and protect these cultural and historical icons. To qualify for membership, an oak was required to be at least 100 years of age, as determined by having a circumference of at least 16 feet at 4.5 feet off the ground. The oldest oaks range from approximately 120 years of age to several hundred years.
